I have my AWS certification coming up next week. Boy am i excited about this. I am testing in 1" plate for the 3G and 4G positions. 7018 rod all the way with the 3/32 for my root. amps around 90 for the root. 1/8 rod with amps around 120. I will be cleaning all of my slag with a wire brush wheel, and grinding any beads that are too humpy. :) Did I miss anything.

Seems a little cold to me. I would run the 3/32 at about 110 amps and the 1/8 about 130 amps

Tyler,
In addition to what Cactus has posted a bit of hopefully helpful advice.
Always try and weld as hot as your ability allows (within the range of the WPS).
If the WPS lists 100 - 130 amps start off at 120 amps.
If you are getting undercut or you are struggling to control your puddle then back off a little bit with the amps.
If you have no undercut and weld is flowing good then bump your amps up a little bit more.
It is all about finding the optimum range for your ability - that is why WPSs have a range, it is to cater for different welders. Some weld slow and cold, some weld hot and fast but they have all found the speed and heat they feel most comfortable with.
Best of luck with your test,
Regards,
Shane

This is just the beginning and I'm excited for you.

You may come across D1.1 tests such as the one required by WABO (Washington Assoc of Bldg Officials) that is the same as you are taking except you cannot use any power tools (i.e., power wire wheel nor power grinder).

Good luck to ya!

Just to clarify the WABO Standard a bit.

WABO 27-13.5, 1.1.5 - Cleaning and removal of slag, undercut and excess bead convexity between passes is acceptable if made in position with the approval of the Welder Examiner.

WABO 27-13.5, 1.1.6 - Grinding of root and cover passes not permitted
