I was watching some rig welders build a new water tower a few weeks ago and was just wondering if anyone has ever worked on these, and what code would cover them. Structural or pressure vessel? I have never talked to anyone who has worked on one. Thanks.

I don't think they classify as a pressurized vessel...could be wrong.

Well I wondered about that, but wasn't sure how they figured all the weight of the water pushing out etc.

I'm not sure, but I believe AWWA does.

(American Water Works Association)

Pickupman

I don't know about building the water tank on the tower although it is fun to watch a good crew.

But I have been called on to make penetrations in the Tower itself for whatever line they need to run.

The only Code referenced for any weld requirements was AWS D1.1.

Thanks guys. I'm going to do a little more digging. It's got my curiosity up.

I think Al is correct.

It should be AWWA D100 which is highly connected I believe to D1.1.

I believe my copy is from 1997 and is not current.

We just did a couple of Jobs that were AWWA C206. Most all of AWWA Code refers back to AWS D1.1

Brent and Cactus are correct they are AWWA which refers to AWS D1.1  which is pretty common with any water storage tanks and also steel water lines
