But I will say that "Welding Engineers" in the U.S. are rare. Only a small handful of colleges have specific weld engineering undergrad and post grad degrees... The demand for those graduates is VERY high.

Welding is applied not only to metals; it's used also for plastics.
One example among thousands: the natural gas distribution net of Sao Paulo consists of HDPE (high density poliethylene) piping, butt welded by the "hot plate" method.

As long as there is a need to join 2 pieces of material together, there will be a need for welding and Weld Engineering.
