It seems to me that welding rates are creeping up..!  Have any of you guys noticed that..?  I used to hear 40 an hr quite a bit then 45 and now Im hearing 60 more and more with some 75s  and even a few 80s and 90s now and then..!  I hope it keeps going up...!  Im shooting for the 100 to 110 range.  I figure aim high and see what happens. Lol..!

I'm at 70 and I hear *****ing about it all the time. For a field welders with a rig, the rate really should be closer to a hundred. We drive a rolling bomb, and get burned and electricuted for a living.

I charge 55.00 in the shop and 65.00 for onsite work. Plus consumables . I would like to be charging more but I not sure if that is a good idea right now.

Weldors should command a high rate.

Mechanics 10 or 15 years ago were getting $85 an hour.  At least that is what was posted at the San Diego Merecdes dealers.  I think my Honda dealer here in town charges $85 an hour.

You are still GREEN, And you already want a raise ? Here is an Idea. Demand more and you will get more. First thing you need to do is get out of Houston ! Rates will NEVER go up there. When we were in New Iberia, I paid $20.00 an hour more than ANYONE else in the Area.

All new customers pay $125Hr. here.   Established, no hassle, good paying companys get a $100Hr rate.

and to add to what sourdough said, we show up like an ambulance at all hours of the night when we are called for an emergency, we fix other peoples screw ups, in the mud, cold, rain, out in some god awful Field or under a greasy machine.

And where are you getting that rate at...?
Parent - - By Dualie (***) Date 06-17-2012 23:37
where it still isnt enough.  CA

Shazam! Great comeback, and comments. The guy that works for 55 is basically working for 25 an hr at the end of the year when he ads up his expenses/net income. And driving the rate down so the guy that is worth a hundred can barely fill his tanks at the end of the day.

It's true.

I have no problem getting $65 here for steel (rig or shop). Bid jobs usually work out for far more.  If they complain I just tell them to go find the $35 hr guy and see what they get.

$70 rig and $60 shop here in ks.

80 shop time in Colorado. Turning work away because nobody can afford start-ups anymore.

I'm not trying to drive down the rates or undercut anybody .  I'm in middle Georgia and I try to work inside a 100 mile radius. For this area my rate is about average . If I was in a part of the country where I could get 100/hr.  That is what I would charge. There times when I make more and times when I make less, but I make a living and I aint punching a  time clock so I'm satisfied. (for now)

Rates are what you ask for. Just like the lady at the junk sale down the road from me she had used tin with rust spots in it and sold all 200 sheets with nail holes for 10.00 a sheet. I just reroofed my barn from McCoys for 10.025 for 8 footers. Go figure

That's about the rate around here Randy. I hear of some in the $65's and of course huge shops with tons of overhead are asking more but as somebody else said, at $55/hour around here and a minimum people are still growling, excuse me, crying. I've bid out a ton of handrail lately and folks scream custom, American made then in the end they want your price to be like they're picking it up at Walmart. I know a guy or two around here that are doing $45/hour supplying all the consumables. As a wise friend once told me, I can stay at home and go broke, I don't have to go out and work at it.

The last yard I was in was paying 45 an hour but we were getting 70 plus hr a week so we were still making 3k a week.  Im tired of that rate.  Call me a spoiled brat but I WANT 65 plus an hour from now on if at all possible...! !

Conventional theory is that in a down economy just staying in business, at any cost, will result in increased marketshare and profits when the economy recovers and no one else is there to compete. That's the theory.

True. Us guys that can find work and keep blazing up and down the road sucking down 4 gallons per mile in a bust are remembered......and hated......

You are gonna have to move out of Texas if you are looking to make a STEADY $65.00 per hour
