The question has been brought up and I’ve heard a couple of different interpretations in the past about what positions are qualified with and without charpy impacts. In AWS D1.1, Table 4.2 note a, says that one test plate, pipe, or tube shall be required for each qualified position. I understand that but when charpy impacts are required, table 4.6, variable 6 states that the 3G vertical up test qualifies for all positions and vertical down. The question is, do we need to run all three positions and just perform charpy impacts on the vertical or can we get all positions qualified by welding just one plate in the 3G uphill progression? How do you interpret this?
