I am sitting here correcting the weld symbols on drawings using a red pen.  I decided to order one of those green plastic templates we used to use back in the days of drafting boards.  I found the one I wanted on-line and placed an order for two...one spare (with this bunch of kid Engineers, I might wear the first one out).  For two templates it was about $16.00, but the shipping was something like $20.00+.  I finally called one of the few drafting supply stores in the Philadelphia area and got a more reasonable price with shipping...then found out it might be three + weeks for delivery.  It seems that to a large degree, they are not used anymore...since CAD came about.   I suddenly feel older...

Actually Trackergd, consider yourself lucky. You have both the knowledge of yesteryears and the wisdom to embrace the technology of today. Likely your "kid engineers" don't necessarily care to learn of the prior ways in which things were done, at least not a lot of them. Best regards, Allan

You get drawings with weld symbols???:wink::twisted:
More than once I've been handed prints that are one view of a 3d cad model printed out on an 8X11 sheet...
I'm lucky if I get enough dimensions to put the silly kajigger together, let alone what kind of weld and where they want it...:wink:

I had a great one yesterday...

Me: What is this weld symbol?
Engineer: I duno..
Me: You put it on the drawing, you don't know what it means?
Engineer: I guess I better check..
Me: Here is a weld symbol chart, please find that weld symbol for me.
Engineer: I can't find it.
Me: Probably because it does not exist.
Engineer: Well...well....it's in CAD...see...oh wait...I put the wrong symbol in..I meant to put a fillet weld symbol.
Me: An upside down Y on the reference line is not a fillet weld...
Engineer: Ummmmm....it might be a V groove weld....
Me:

That sounds just like our engineers. They put European weld symbols on our drawings all the time just because they are available in their computer imaging software, drives me nuts!

My favorite weld symbol is the field weld symbol.  It makes my job in the shop so much easier.

Yeah Scott, especially when you draw it in yourself!

I love my old templates and guard them well. I found one once in a parking lot in Midland TX that I had never seen before, I must try and look it up on ebay! I use it regular, I feel sorry for the original owner but a least it's getting used and is now seeing a new life in the UK.

I love CAD. The "young" engineers design, simulate and provide prints "with all attachments removed for clarity". Then you get out on a job and the tower looks like a porcupine with all of the cell sites on it. Brackets, clamps, tower structure basically hiding and making the weld, a good quality weld impossible. CAD, the computer said it was ok, jeez.....

As my Dad the PE used to say years ago..."you can make anything work on paper"..

There is actually something worse than incorrect weld symbols...it's the favorite Engineering clause in the drawing notes: "All welding must be in accordance with the latest revision of the applicable AWS requirements".   It's almost laughable when neither the weld shop or the Engineers have a single copy of any AWS standards...  Scary when the Engineers have no idea what's in the standards, including the "Engineer's Responsibilities" under General Requirements.

All the prints I've seen just say "according to AWS D1.1", no mention of which copy I'm supposed to use, LOL!!

"well, I welded it according to the AWS D1.1 1972 edition, what's the issue?":lol::lol::lol:
Parent - - By Superflux (****) Date 01-28-2016 04:20
Is there a 1954 edition available?
Parent - By CWI555 (*****) Date 02-01-2016 01:11
Anything earlier would have to be aws D1.0.

Hey, I just happen to have a copy of the 72 Edition !

But I was only in like 3rd grade...

Al and Brent were already old.

YEP, I must be THAT old; I almost started detailing my walks to school...5miles up hill both directions.

My first jobs, if to any codes, would have been to codes from the early 70's since I left the farm and started welding for a career in 1975.  That was all on logging equipment and there wasn't a D14 series back then.  But, as far as I know, my first true code job was for pipe and I got certified to ASME in 1978.

Does bring back some memories.

He Is In Control, Have a Great Day,  Brent

First D1.1 "equivalent" was Code 1 Part A published in 1928

So says the Foreword of my D1.1:2010

Also just downloaded the first (1922) edition of the Journal, just for fun

can you post the link to that download?  Ive been slowly collecting old welding books and I think it would be cool to read.

It is on Google books, or I can send the pdf I downloaded
Parent - - By MRWeldSoCal (***) Date 02-02-2016 21:26

Parent - By fschweighardt (***) Date 02-03-2016 13:35

I found a meeting of the engineers...

Ain't it the truth!!

Brent, you are not old. You are experienced. I got my pipe certs in '76. Welded all day today and found just as many aggravations as I did back when I started. I don't know how I have lasted. Couldn't find anything better, I guess.
Parent - - By 803056 (*****) Date 02-21-2016 21:28 Edited 02-21-2016 21:31
Not old; wisdom.

"Why did you choose that groove design and where did you find that symbol?"

"On a different drawing. It worked there, so I figured it would work here."
