Dear Experts

1. I need to qualify a WPS as per AWS D1.1 2015 Ed. And I came across Table 4.5 and essential variable 31.

My question is

If I qualify a PQR with But Joint Single V Groove CJP (open root-no backing/back gauging) per clause 4.

    -  Will this PQR qualify  Butt Joints of all designs of Groove (V, Single Bevel, Double bevel, U, J etc.) CJP (Open Root).

2. My Production Joint is a Pipe (>24inch Dia) to Plate  in T Joint  Single bevel CJP Open Root
    - A WPS with Butt Joint (plate to Plate) CJP Open Root with One plate single bevel and testing as per clause 4 -- will this WPS help me to weld above production joint? Referring to Clause 4.10.1.1

Please see attached files.....

Experts, would appreciate your valuable inputs.

Reply: You would be qualified for the joint you qualified by testing and any prequalified groove detail as well as prequalified fillet welds.

Reply: Yes

Thank You Al...

To be more specific- when we say "prequalified groove detail",  this PQR will be qualified only for Groove details given in Fig 3.3 either with backing or back gauging, but not for the welds welded one side CJP without backing or back gauging... I'm I right??

Sort of a question for Al related to his response  (assuming I read it correctly)

Clause 4.6  (4) directs CJP of tubular connections to Clause 9.15      (This removes you from clause 4)

I think our production WPS is stated as a T-joint welded from one side with no backing.   So think T, K, & Y  qualification in tubular.

9.15 (4) says:    T-, Y-, K-connections without backing welded
from one side only (see 9.15.4).

This is where your long and improbable journey begins...…  You may begin to hate me now.

9.15.4 T-, Y-, or K-Connections without Backing
Welded from One Side Only. When qualification is
required, a WPS for T-, Y-, or K-connections without
backing welded from one side only shall require the
following:

9.15.4.1 WPSs without Prequalified Status. For a
WPS whose essential variables are outside the prequalified
range, qualification for CJP tubular groove welds
shall require the following:

(1) Qualification in conformance with Figure 9.25 for
pipes with outside diameters greater than or equal to 4 in
[100 mm] or Figure 9.25

But Lar,,,,  This is a 1G rotated thing-a-ma-bob right ?

Yes, yes it is.... But All I see here is 6GR...…….   I don't wanna see it... But I see it.
