At risk of sounding dumb can anybody give me a simple procedure for conducting the pretension verification test? I believe I remember exactly how to do it but it has been a long time. No rotational capacity test.

Regards,

Brian

OK assemble the bolt nut and washer on the Skidmore tighten it to a snug tight condition(a normal man pulling on a spud wrench or a few impacts with an air wrench). After you get it snug tight mark the head of the boltand nut. Then put a mark on the plate that shows how far you must turn the nut. How far you have to turn the nut depends on the length of the bolt. That part is on the chart in the RCSC book at the link above on page 48( Adobe Acrobat says it is page 60). When you have turned the nut the required distance the Skidmore gauge should read above the required Kips.

Thank you. That is pretty much how I remember it.

Get some TC Bolts, they are a "snap" to verify in a Skidmore. :)

edit: Brian do you have a copy of the structural bolting handbook by SSTC? That is a must have, it has all of the procedures written out for you. All the charts are included for all sizes and strength bolts.
If I remember it is only $10 bucks or so.
