CAN ANYONE ADVISE IF STRESS RELIEF ON DISSIMILAR METALS PER D1.5 CAN BE DONE. I'M WELDING ASTM A240 TYPE 304 STAINLESS TO ASTM A709 GR 50 (A572) AND CONTRACT DOCUMENTS REQUIRE STRESS RELIEF ON ALL WELDED COMPONETS. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

D1.5 only lists AASHTO M270 (ASTM A709 steels) so D1.5 will not cover you. If D1.5 is the specified code, you would need to discuss the matter with the engineer for a suitable alternate code. My guess is ASME might apply, but I defer that to those who use ASME.

THANKS CHET, I FIGURED I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO LET THE ENGINEER MAKE THE FINAL CALL AS D1.5 ONLY COVERS A709 STEEL AND D1.6 MAKES NO MENTION OF STRESS RELIEF.I WAS HOPING SOMEONE ELSE HAD COME ACROSS THIS.
