i was thinking about taking this test for vertical and overhead. i was just wondering if this was x-rayed or if it was a destructive test. thanks. :)

Either is acceptable per AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX.

Not being picky on terminology here. It just created in mind a good opportunity to initiate a discussion on a curiosity of mine. Is anybody actually doing X-Ray for weld evaluation anymore?

We do....and the NDT house we use is always full of welder qualification coupons for RT.

Bill,
Is it an actual X-Ray or a Gamma source such as Iridium or Cobalt?
Parent - - By hogan (****) Date 04-10-2007 17:08
i worked for a testing lab that used x-ray and gamma on 1000+ weld quals a year ( mid 90's to early 00's)

Do you remember what criteria they used to determine if X-Ray or Gamma was appropriate?

They told me they would x-ray all aluminum coupons and steel coupons under @ 3/8" w.t.  The rest were shot with Iridium 192.

Hi js55,
It is quite an interesting question you ask as I have welded to ASME IX  for 18 years and have been a CWI for 10 years and I have never heard of bend tests being used except for special applications. Everything was always done RT.
This is only applicable to my experiences in the Southern Hemisphere,
Regards,
Shane

I think RT or bends have their advantages and disadvantages. I've performed mostly bends for performance quals except when a customer spec required otherwise.
As for RT, my thought is that the abreviation includes both Gamma and X-ray (actually the same type of electromagnetic radiation though generated differently). I have never worked in a shop using X-ray. Its always been Gamma. Crank it out, have a cigarette (for heavy wall), look at your watch, crank it in.

Shane,

Either or works. QW-143 is what allows the radiography in lieu of mechanical test within the allowances of QW-305. (not all materials and processes allow radiographic qualification. such as GMAW short circuit, OFW, ESW, or P21-P25 materials and others)

Gerald

We send all our coupons out for RT before bend testing.

I rarely use radiography for qualifying welders. Cut um and bend um!

wow...thats weird

All my certs for aircraft are shot and bend tested  they slice all our coupons after shooting them and then bend and "pull" test them.

is that unusual?"?

Shooting AND bending I suppose is not so unusual. Certainly more thorough. Not sure its necessary. However, tensile testing performance quals I beleive is quite unusual, and perhaps even irrelevent. I mean, if you've shot it and its clean, and bent it and it proves ductile, anything a tensile test would reveal wouldn't be dependent upon a welders ability but more upon the viability of the BM WM choice and the WPS regime.
