Can anyone tell me what A # would  a GTAW weld made with SFA 5.9 , ER 308L be classified as according to ASME specs. I think I've narrowed it down to either 8 or 9 and I think it's 8 but I still am not totally sure.  Thanks for any help.

A-8 would be the classification of the 308 deposit assuming you are welding 304 base metal.

Just for my own enlightenment; why do you say the appropriate filler is 308?  I was under the impression that it was only necessary to match the "L" with the base metal when so specified; but that the use of 308 or 308L was acceptable if the BM was not a low cabron stainless.

I hope this isn't confusing.

Thanks for your input in advance.

Charles.

That's what I get for shooting from the hip. You're right, if the base metal is 304L, the filler metal should most likely match the low carbon of the base metal to prevent sensitization if it will be used in a wetted environment and chlorides or other halide ions are expected.

You can use the chemical analysis published by the manufacturer to determine the A number.

The base metal is a 304 type. The Spec.# is SA-249.  It is used for handrails and the like in public restrooms.
