Can SMAW and FCAW be combined in the same weldment, and if so which electrodes?

Chris,

Usually yes ... IF ... it is allowed in the contract documents.

The WPS for the joint being welded will specify which 'stick' and which 'wire' etc.

Be very careful as a non compatible combination WILL cause weld failures.

Cheers,
jb

Here's a related article "The Effects of Intermixed Weld Metal on Mechanical Properties", that discusses SMAW and self shielded FCAW:

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Yes but  ---- ! If you want to get paid doing it I would require a WPQR and WPS's. I have reviewed a few of such.  Been an engineer and into welding for plus 20 years / five patents. Hope this is helpful.

These combinations are common, but you must have supporting WPS & PQR

SMAW - root pass + FCAW - capping
GTAW - root pass + SMAW - capping
GMAW - root pass + SAW - capping

Does this only apply to pre-qualified procedures ?
