I agree with Jim by the way. My husband is principal of a high school for "alternative" youths out in the country and there is nothing for them at a regular high school. At lot of them get involoved in drugs, knocked up, or drop out because they cant do the "normal" track from high school to college and nothing else is offered to them. In Germany, they try to figure out what a kid would be good at in about middle school and have amazing technical schools with top of the line equipment (we are talking laser welding,cutting,engraving, manual and CNC machining,water jet,robotics, automotive, and good ol fashioned welding) that the factories recruit from directly. These kids were way happier and well adjusted than the kids that we force through our crushing system of homogenity (I dont actually think thats a word) that anything short of college is failure.
