I have a Rock River .223 with a 1in8 twist 18" stainless bull barel. VX III 6.5-25 varment reticle. I have a load worked up with a 77 gr Sierra match bullet that shoots better groups than any other rifle I own or have ever shot. It is my favorite!

It may not be a AR style rifile but i have a blast w my mini 14 and lots of ammo. Just picked up a 10 22 should be lots of fun once i get it sighted in and get some 30 round clips
Parent - - By aevald (*****) Date 11-03-2011 05:45
How ya doin Shad? personally, I have a mini-14 too and love it! My middle son on the other hand, has a bit more serious AR, it's fitted with a stainless bull-barrel chambered in .204 Ruger. It'll shoot 1/4" moa's at a hundred yards very readily. Best regards, Allan

My hunting weapon is a Thompson Center Contender 10" bbl. in 30-30 with 2.5X scope zeroed in at 250 meters, and has always been a one shot, one drop.
It fed my family for many years, and my daughter used it for her deer hunts.
Never was a big fan of the AR platform. Had a couple of AR 15s and a Bushmaster M4, but wheeled and dealed them away.
Sometimes the US military gets too strange on their design criteria. Such as forward assist (AR) and grip safety (1911). My opinion only.

This is the latest addition to my FUN GUN collection...
FN SCAR 16S with a Trijicon ACOG.

http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product1.php?id=ACOG
When the Army tested these in 2007 against the M4, out of 60,000 rounds, the SCAR had 226 failures compared to the M4s 882 failures.

Doing good Allen thanks for asking. Maybe 1 day ill get me a AR. I met a guy at a local flea market that buys n sells guns that's where I got the 10 22. I asked him about 1 he said used 1500 to rich for me right now.
Parent - By aevald (*****) Date 11-04-2011 05:44
Hi Shad, one of two things there, either they go for a lot more in your area or he's just plain high on his prices. My son's AR was $1200 with a hard case, the upgraded barrel and caliber, a Nikon 6x18x44mm scope, a trigger kit, and 3-20 round clips. I am not necessarily an AR fan due to their rather "weird" recoil characteristics. It's almost like there is a delayed double recoil when you squeeze off a round. It's probably just me and my experience with mostly bolt action rifles. Anyway, take care of yourself and I wish you and your family all of the best, Allan
Parent - - By weldwade (***) Date 11-04-2011 18:09
Shad you can pick them up new for less than a grand. The first one I bought was a flat top Armalite for about 850. I sold my mini 14 because it did not have a sturdy way to mount a scope and it was not all that accurate of a rifle. I am way more impressed with the AR than the mini 14. Just my. 02

After the baby gets here maybe I can save up for a new toy
Parent - - By 99205 (***) Date 11-05-2011 13:31
When a baby gets arrives the big boy toys are the first to get sold.
Parent - By Rafter_G_Weldin (***) Date 11-06-2011 00:08
Not mine again I sold damn near everything when I got sick. Ill keep the toys I have now and keep adding to them

Can't go wrong with a 1022. As long as you only get steel feed lipped mags in 32 round MAX! the 50 and 100 rounders always seem to have problems.
Parent - - By Rafter_G_Weldin (***) Date 11-04-2011 02:39
I saw a tommy clip for it on cheaper than dirt but it had alot of bad reviews so i passed. I'd like to get a stainless min 14 but the stock is plastic so i wont get 1
Parent - - By Superflux (****) Date 11-04-2011 05:36
Don't let the plastic stock hold you back. Many buy the Ranch rifle and the put the RamLine or other folders on them and then the wooden stock goes in a corner of the shed or the trash. Get in with a gunsmith or whomever and you can probably find one cheap or free.
DO NOT get the 100 round "Tommy Gun" drum mag for the 1022. I had one and they are crap. Ended up selling the rifle with the drum just to get rid of the drum.
I forget who makes them but it is a crank device that you dump a box of 22s in and wind it up to load 1022 mags.
After a couple/three of 25 rounders down the pipe, she's gonna need a cool off period.
Speaking of cooling off...
Wong Mart, Cabellas, Bass Pro, etc., sells battery powered raft pumps for about 15 bucks. After Mr. Fun Gun is about to melt the barrel, just stick the air pump in the muzzle and it will cool it off in no time.
Me personally, would rather have 3 Mini-14s for the price of 1 AR...
But don't listen to me, I just bought one FN SCAR for the price of 3 ARs........????

Hey John, I guess I'm just old school, I recently ran into a 27" bull-barreled CZ 220 Swift on a Mauser action with a Fajen stock. I have yet to shoot it and don't know the barrel twist as of yet. But I'm looking forward to christening it with my trigger finger and some 55 gr. rounds. For what ever reason, the 220 Swift has been a favorite caliber of mine for many years and one of my first 220 Swifts was a Ruger Model 77 bull-barreled varminter that laid waste to many a prairie dog or other small rodent. I hand-load for it so ammunition isn't a terribly limiting issue, finding brass can be. Stay safe and I hope you make it back to the states again before too long. Best regards, Allan

Cactus,
That is a pretty fair price for all the parts you get on that. Be well worth the $400 extra for .300 WinMag.
This is next on my must have. It's a grand cheaper than the Barrett.
A Sako in .338 Lapua is not gonna let me down.

Big fan of Sako myself don't have one that fancy but just got a forester in .308 win mainly because I do not have this caliber in any other gun. I love it have it dialed in at 200 yrds and even with the factory ammo group is 1.5 inches not sure if or how much I can tighten that up with hand loads but it will be fun to try.
Parent - By Superflux (****) Date 11-04-2011 09:36
Allan,
I'm with you on the 220 Swift. It too holds a certain mystique and appeal with me.
There are so many new designer calibers these days, it's confusing for us (me) old timers.
Reloads are the only way to go. Not just for economics, but it is rare to find a factory load that cannot be improved upon depending on individual barrel harmonics. And faster is not always more accurate.
30 years ago, I started using Sierra Spire points in my T/C 3030 and found some remarkable accuracy at 300 yds. I even experimented with some slower powders for the Winchester 94. This of course is not recommended practice due to having spire points in a tubular magazine and had to always fend off the habit of automatically wanting to load the mag with more than one.
I too am old school and embrace my revolvers, lever and bolt actions. I do draw the line at Black Powder though.
But! After a serious session in pursuit of the One Hole Target. I do enjoy stabbing in a hi-capacity clip and playing "dance the can".

I like the wood stock myself as for the Tommy clip I wont so it just get some 30sof n go have fun
Parent - - By Tex (**) Date 11-06-2011 23:41
Guys, yall can talk about all of the fancy overpriced guns you want. Me, I'll stick with my old Winchester '94 30-30. This particular rifle I traded for. Ended up giving way more in trade than what the gun is worth, but I got if from a friend who's dad owned the rifle before he died. The dad was an old cowboy who grew up in this area before the "Old West" was completely dead. I would see him down at the bar in the little town south of here. He would set and tell stories all day and into the evening about cowboys, rank horses and mountain lion hunts. He carried this old rifle with him everywhere  and it has the scars to prove it. Now I keep it cleaned and oiled but it goes with me everywhere. Granted it's no 300 mag or 220 Swift, but for a ranch rifle that goes on my saddle or in the truck I couldnt ask for better. And this rifle has some history and sentimental value. When they finally had to put ol' Bob in the nursing home his nurses told him he couldnt have any whiskey because it was "bad" for him. Heck he was over 80 yrs old. What could it hurt. We would sneak him in a small bottle of Lord Calvert when we would go see him. That old man could sure tell some stories.

I really like shooting the Hornady Lever Evolution ammo thru this old 94. At 300 yards I dropped a fox with a neck shot a while back using open sights. Between the "Hostile Native" and I, we've got quite an assortment of rifles and handguns and some are even kinda fancy and spendy, but when I need to shoot something the old cowboy '94 is my go to rifle.

X2 there Tex

I've always wanted an AR30 in a 338 Lapua, all tricked out of course. Just looks like a heck of a fun rifle if I could locate a 1000 yard range.
Parent - - By Joseph P. Kane (****) Date 11-07-2011 03:49
Shawn
I have the AR 30 in 338 Lapua.  I couldn't find a 1000 Meter Range to fire it on.  I paid a Gunsmith to mount the scope on it and zero it at 400 Yds, because I couldn't find a range when I was in Lynchburg VA. a few years ago.  I still have never fired it myself.
Parent - - By Cumminsguy71 (*****) Date 11-09-2011 07:14
I think finding a 1000 yard range anywhere would be tricky, unless you own a farm! I was pretty serious about the lapua til I checked the cost of the ammo, pretty crazy!! Loading your own ammo would be a sure thing there.
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 11-09-2011 14:35
I have a 1000 yard range right off my back porch ! Complete with Shooting Bench
Parent - - By Cumminsguy71 (*****) Date 11-09-2011 17:03
I really need to come down there then, make money, buy my AR30 and shoot and your private range!! Dang!!
Parent - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 11-09-2011 22:17
I have Live Hogs at the end of the range !!
Parent - - By CWI555 (*****) Date 11-08-2011 11:18
Don't really have a favorite. I prefer FN FAL and HK 91.
Parent - By Superflux (****) Date 11-08-2011 19:10
FN FALs sure look sexy. When I saw that SCAR... love at first sight. Always been a fan of the Browning Hi Power (made by FN) and have owned two. Never have heard of anyone saying their FN was a P.O.S.
Don't have a lot of bang stix anymore, but I prefer to save up if I have to and get the best. Some times it doesn't take a lot of cabbage. My $165 Remington 870 Express is as good and reliable a shotgun as ever was made. It drops clay and it drops pheasants. Never jams, and alway goes boom.
