I understand the A number is an essential variable per the AWS D1.6 for WPS. Can someone please help me understand what the A number actually is and how does one determine it? Is it a number designated solely by the filler metal used or does it get determined by the filler metal/base metal combination? Will be welding 304 to A588 using a 309 solid wire GMAW process. Thanks

Here's something Al posted a few years ago...

https://app.aws.org/forum/topic_show.pl?tid=24271

"A numbers are groupings for the ferrous metal weld deposits. In certain circumstances you can use the A number determined by the filler metal manufacturer. In other cases, such as when welding dissimilar metals, you have to send a section of the weld deposit out for chemical analysis and then see what A number it matches."
