To clarify one of Lawrence's notes, Metallurgy = geometry, algebra, occasionally calculus and differential equations, and a bit of black magic/squinting because we don't always know enough about the actual composition or local crystalline structure.
Same applies to distortion, but heavier on the black magic/squinting.
