Im looking for some actual weld photos of downhand pipe. looking to see what everyone does for Cap passes
Parent - - By cyrus 07 (**) Date 05-28-2008 14:39
I too would also like to see some everyday welded pipe pictures, not just the pictures of your best welds ever that you have framed and hanging on your living room wall so you can show "old drunk uncle Bud" at every Christmas party you have had for the last 20 years and tell him "yeah Bud, im probably the best there is, was, and ever gonna be at this here welding business, why just look at that picture!!"

I tried some downhill welding yesterday with my machine boy it feels weird I'm so use to going uphill. Can I ask now when you weld your cap do you weld it downhill as well?? or uphill??
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-01-2008 02:59
yes downhill with 5/32 70++
Parent - - By chris2698 (****) Date 06-01-2008 03:12
so wait this is a 7018 rod downhill?? or no it can't be. There so man ydifferent dang rods out there
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-01-2008 03:36
no 70+ is actually 8010G
Parent - - By chris2698 (****) Date 06-01-2008 04:08
oh ok does it weld like a 6010 rod? but it's just stronger
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-01-2008 13:00
ya pretty much
Parent - - By d walmsley Date 06-02-2008 01:07
is there any weaving involved running downhill for your cover pass and what size , thickness of pipe and settings on your machine. sorry for all the questions just trying to learn how to weld downhand.
Parent - By ironbyaaron Date 06-02-2008 01:32
One way to look at pipe welds in the real world is where natural gas valves ect. stick up out of the ground.
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-02-2008 01:53
mostly side to side on the top and sides and i horseshoe towards the bottom, more drastic the closer to the bottom. the pipe in the pic is 12" .250 wall the heat just depends on the machine
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-03-2008 01:08
Let me ask you what size gap do you put in your pipe using 1/8 5p+
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-03-2008 01:45
about 1/8
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-03-2008 01:48
What amp do you run down hill, I tried a 1/8 gap and had suck back problems.
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-03-2008 02:01
every machine is different, try taking your heat down 5 degrees at a time or better yet maybe just slow down a little, but my ideal gap is between 3/32 and 1/8
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-03-2008 03:00
Thanks, I'll try that and see what happens, I've been welding a long time on oil field junk and want to get into pipeline.
Parent - - By pipeliner04 (**) Date 06-05-2008 02:17

Parent - By 52lincoln (***) Date 06-04-2008 21:28
what are you referring to
Parent - - By welderdan (*) Date 06-04-2008 23:25
leave what like what
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-05-2008 00:41
Welderdan, to me that looks like a pit in the pipe, not a grinder mark, correct if i'm wrong.
Parent - - By jrw159 (*****) Date 06-05-2008 00:51
this is jrw159, and It does look like a pit, but why is it shiny while the numerous others that appear to be equal are not.

It might be nothing, but from my standpoint any time you see something like that it warrants a closer look.

And I am probably way off base as to what Kix is refering too.

Dad gummm, I wish he would give it up!  :-)
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-05-2008 00:55
Those stringer bead brushes can polish those pits pretty good.

welderdan, I think that pretty good work good even shape and so on. clean edges no undercuts.
Parent - - By jrw159 (*****) Date 06-05-2008 01:42
I agree, but with a wire brush attachment you will leave a bigger footprint, or shiny spot.

And yes by apearances the welds look good. :-)

jrw159
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-05-2008 01:50
thought for the day, no matter how you try to polish a turd, its still a turd. those welds ain't turds
Parent - By 52lincoln (***) Date 06-05-2008 01:51
i agree with ya man look pretty slick to me
Parent - By Kix (****) Date 06-05-2008 12:21

Kix,
OK partner, you have me wondering.

I see one spot on center right of one pic that looks like a possible grinder hit or ground down arc strike, but I can not be positive.

Tell us my friend, what it is you see. :-)

I ask this in the most respectful way, as I hold your opinion/interpretation at a high level.

John

EDIT: Unless you mean are they going to wrap, jeep, run pigs, and backfill, with compaction, cleanup and reseed per specs. Because if so, you are right, they are far from done. :-)

Looks like soap-stone to me.  Then again, I just got back from Hooters and my vision is skewed.
Parent - - By pipeliner04 (**) Date 06-05-2008 02:08
well,,,that looks descent and all but its not somethin id leave on a piece of pipe.  the first thing i see is that damn start.  what happened there dude.   its kinda small on my computer but from what i can see,,,if you wanna make a slick ass cap,,,slow down and long arc a little more with that 70+,,,itll look better.  and if thats some of your best work we need to meet up so i can adjust your machine.  but dont get me wrong,,,i see way worse all day long and very few times find a good lookin cap.  let me see if i can get these pics off this phone and ill show u a slick ass cap
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 06-05-2008 02:10
let us see

I work for the NEF plant near Eunice. Hired me as a welder and put me thru school for it, with more schooling to come.   My company has me farmed out to a welding shop.

Myself and wife leave for Europe July 1.

Will spend about a year over there training and working while we wait on the plant to be finished.
Parent - - By jrw159 (*****) Date 06-05-2008 02:28
I can agree that it is not the best looking, but not by far the worst I have been presented with.
Parent - - By pipeliner04 (**) Date 06-05-2008 02:29

more than a dime is a waste of time!
Parent - - By southerngray (**) Date 06-28-2008 01:22
Sir don't take me response as a insult but you asked for opinion's. The joint is not full there is undercut all along the weld and the cap look's more like a fill pass that dosen't tie into the side's, again I am not being critical just my honest opinion, it would be a cut out for the inspector's I work for it simply would not make the grade
