Super Steel, Milwaukee, Wis., has partnered with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (HCCW) to launch a welder skills development program to train and place the next generation in welding careers. It’s a part of the HCCW Welder Training Initiative, launched last year, and has emerged as a national provider in private-public partnership with ITW/Miller Electric Mfg. Co. as the lead partner, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, American Welding Society Foundation, City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), and Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board among other state technical colleges/workforce investment boards. “Our workforce is about fifty percent welders, so we are committed to building and developing the careers of those in this industry,” said Dirk Smith, Super Steel president and CEO. This initiative is designed to have trainees job ready within 18 weeks through a three-part process, including HCCW Essential Life Skills Training, MATC Technical Training, and Mentored-On-the-Job Training in addition to one-on-one support for trainees who are case managed by the HCCW. A HCCW-Miller Electric-Super Steel customized and MATC-accredited training program will teach the skills needed to obtain a base-level welding position at Super Steel with a focus on the skills needed for customers. This training program is also offered at no cost to the trainees. Upon completion of the HCCW and MATC portions, trainees will be placed in a full-time, paid role at Super Steel where they will complete three weeks of classroom training followed by nine weeks of mentored on-the-job training. Candidates are paid to participate in the HCCW Essential Life Skills Training portion, and space is limited.
