TIDEWATER February 12 Speaker: David Landon, AWS president Affiliation: Vermeer Mfg. Co. Topic: “Passing the Torch” Activity: Landon presented awards to Bill Dotson, Walter Duke, Chair Wayne Smith, Bobby Perkins, John Calver, and Jenord Alston. Dotson received the Life Member certificate for 35 years of service to the Society. Walter Duke received the District Educator Award, Smith received the District Director’s Award, and Perkins and Calver received appreciation awards for hosting the event at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Va. Alston received a special award recognizing him as an “Ambassador of Welding” for the Tidewater Section. Topic: Blacksmith welding Activity: Dist. 5 Director Carl Matricardi met with 48 members, students, and guests at Florida Structural Steel in Tampa, Fla., for a demonstration of blacksmith welding. Tulsa Welding School Student Chapter January 22 Activity: The newly chartered Chapter, affiliated with the North Florida Section, held its first meeting to present 90 WELDING JOURNAL / APRIL 2015 its leaders. Welding Instructor Dion Thornhill is the advisor. The chair is Jack Dulls, Vice Chair Andric Rasher, Secretary Sean Lawler, and the Treasurer is Mike Merrilees. Dist. 8 Director Josh Burgess and Chair Thomas Atkinson presented awards to Larry Craig and Garth Land (Section CWI), Buster Hales and Delbert Butler (Section Meritorious), Chris Renfro (District Educator), Sam Davis (District Private Sector Educator), Jason West (District CWI), and a student award to Jonathan Elsea, accepted by his father. NASHVILLE February 12 Activity: The meeting, held at World Testing in Mt. Juliet, Tenn., featured the annual welding scholarship rifle raffle. Steve Parker won a Henry Firearms Golden Boy .22 caliber rifle donated by Eddie Teems at Holston Gases. Chris Daniel and his team at Stoody Co. donated Bass Pro gift cards won by Phil Evans and Bob Williams. The event raised $600 for the Holston Gases Scholarship to be presented during the Section’s annual scholarship awards meeting to be held this month.
