SOCIETY NEWS MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITIES District Director and Student Chapter Member Awards Presented The District Director Award provides a means for District Directors to recognize individuals and corporations who have contributed their time and effort to the affairs of their local Section and/or District. Stewart Harris, Dist. 4 Director, has nominated Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Charlotte Section, for this award. The Student Chapter Member Award was established to recognize AWS Student Members whose Student Chapter activities have produced outstanding school, community and/or industry achievements. Huck Hughes, advisor, Columbiana County Career and Technical Center Student Chapter, Dist. 4, has selected Homer Swanson to receive this award. Ben Bilott, advisor, Westmoreland County Community College Student Chapter, Pittsburgh Section, Dist.7, has named Ted Black and D. Travis Liston for this award. Ted Black spearheaded the reinstatement of the Chapter last year, and Nominate Your Candidates for These WeldingRelated Awards The deadline for nominating candidates for the following awards is December 31 prior to the year of the awards’ presentations. William Irrgang Memorial Award This award includes a $2500 honorarium to recognize the individual who has done the most over the past five years to advance the science and technology of welding. International Meritorious Certificate Award The award recognizes, in the broadest terms, the honoree’s significant contributions and service to the international welding community. 88 WELDING JOURNAL / APRIL 2015 National Meritorious Award The award includes a $2500 honorarium to recognize the recipient’s loyalty, good counsel, dedication to AWS affairs, and promotion of cordial relations with industry and other technical organizations. Honorary Membership Award This award cites an individual who has eminence in the welding profession or has made outstanding developments in the field of welding arts. George E. Willis Award The award is presented to an individual who has promoted the advancement of welding internationally by fostering cooperative participation in technology transfer, standards rationalization, and promotion of industrial goodwill for the Society. The Prof. Koichi Masubuchi award, with a $5000 honorarium, is presented to one person, 40 or younger, who has made significant contributions to the advancement of materials joining through research and development. Send a list of your candidate’s experience, publications, honors, awards, and at least three letters of recommendation from fellow researchers to Prof. Todd Palmer, tap103@psu.edu. This award is sponsored annually by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Ocean Engineering. Candidates Sought to Receive the MIT Masubuchi Award as chairman, kept the Chapter on track with regular meetings and events. A leader in the classroom with top grades, he worked as Lab Aide, and organized construction of a 22-ft tubular aluminum snowman display. D. Travis Liston served as vice chairman, maintained top grades, and worked as a Lab Aide. He assisted in the smooth running of the Chapter with his ready assistance to other students and faculty. He also worked many hours on the Chapter’s 22-ft snowman fabrication project.
