District 9 Michael Skiles, director (337) 501-0304 michaelskiles@cox.net BIRMINGHAM January 24 Activity: The Section members joined apprentices from the United Apprentices Local 372, Student Chapter members, and students from the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy (TCTA) to train 22 Boy Scouts to earn their welding merit badges. The event was held at TCTA. Local 372 sponsored the event. CENTRAL LOUISIANA January 29 Speaker: Don Sanders, Section chair Affiliation: Hayes Manufacturing Topic: How to pass a welding test Activity: The meeting was held at Central Louisiana Technical Community College in Pineville, La. MOBILE January 8 Speaker: Clay Byron Affiliation: Miller Electric Mfg. Co., Topic: Advanced welding technologies Activity: The event included a demonstration of new equipment and filler metals. The program was held at WESCO Gas & Welding Supply in Prichard, Ala. February 5 Activity: The Section toured the Gulf Power James F. Crist Generating Plant in Pensacola, Fla. Kristie Kelley, employee development coordinator, conducted the tour for 37 attendees. NEW ORLEANS January 11–16 Activity: The Section sponsored a 9- year recertification course for 25 Certified Welding Inspectors at Doubletree MAHONING VALLEY — Attendees are shown during their tour. Brenner, director (330) 484-3650 bobren28@yahoo.com MAHONING VALLEY February 12 Activity: This tour of CMI Industry Americas, Inc., in Salem, Ohio, included members from Columbiana County Career and Technology Center Student Chapter and the Warren, Ohio, chapter of ASM International. The company manufactures roller hearths and furnaces for tubing manufacture. Scott Brown, sales manager, made a presentation about the various operations.
